Eye exams

An eye exam with time to explain.

Every comprehensive eye exam is with George, and it takes as long as your eyes need. There is time to listen, examine your eyes properly and explain what was found.

Who it's for

Adults and children, whether your vision has changed, you're due for a check, or you've never had an eye exam.

From around 40, most people notice close work getting harder. From 65, a yearly exam is a good habit, and Medicare generally covers one every 12 months.

What to bring

  • Your Medicare card
  • Your current glasses and contact lenses, even old ones
  • A list of any medicines you take
  • Sunglasses, in case your pupils need to be widened

The appointment

What happens at your exam

  1. 01

    Your history first

How your eyes are going, your work and screens, driving, any family history of eye disease, and anything that has changed.

  2. 02

    Vision and prescription

George measures how well you see and works out your prescription, checking it with you in a trial frame before anything is ordered.

  3. 03

    Eye health

A check of the front and back of the eye and your eye pressure, with the tests George decides are clinically appropriate for you.

  4. 04

    Findings, explained

George shows you what he found, on screen where that helps, and explains it in plain words. Ask anything.

  5. 05

    Your plan

Your prescription, any follow-up George recommends, and whether you need glasses or contact lenses at all.

Eye health

What George looks for

This is a full-scope exam, not just a prescription check. George looks for early signs of the conditions that threaten sight, when there's the most that can be done about them.

  • —macular degeneration
  • —glaucoma
  • —diabetic retinopathy
  • —keratoconus
  • —cataracts
  • —Other sight-threatening conditions

He uses computerised and laser-based imaging alongside the traditional examination, and explains what each shows you. If something needs a specialist's care, he'll say so and refer you.

Medicare and your exam

Bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders. Medicare generally covers a comprehensive eye test every three years if you are under 65 and every 12 months from age 65. Other Medicare-covered visits may be available when clinically necessary and the MBS requirements are met. We can check this for you when you book.

Your prescription

Your prescription is yours. We give you a copy at the end of your exam, and you are welcome to buy glasses anywhere.

If you'd like glasses from us, our dispensing team takes you through frames and lenses, working from what George has recommended. How buying glasses works here.

Questions people ask

Will my eyes be dilated?

Only if George needs a better view of the back of the eye. Your vision may be blurry and sensitive to light for a few hours afterwards, so it's best not to drive straight after. George will tell you before he uses the drops.

Can I bring my child to my appointment?

Yes. If they need their own exam, book a children's eye exam for them as well.

What if I need to change my booking?

Call or message us as early as you can and we will find another time.
